The DC extended universe films (DCEU) have been a mixed bag so far, with Wonder Woman and Aquaman being the most appreciated so far.
Justice League and Batman vs Superman were met with negative reviews, but most viewers can agree that Suicide Squad holds the torch for the DCEU’s biggest failure.
Aside from introducing Margo Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Suicide Squad has very little going for it. Will Smith is underused in his portrayal of Batman villain Deadshot, and the meandering “story” is nonsensical.
WB is pushing forward with Suicide Squad 2, and Will Smith recently confirmed that he dropped out of the film. Variety has reported that Idris Elba has been nabbed for the role, having been WB’s first choice to replace Smith.
Suicide Squad 2 also has a new director in James Gunn, famous for launching another group of lesser-known misfits Guardians of the Galaxy into the spotlight. Gunn was famously fired from his role in Guardians of the Galaxy 3, and he quickly signed on to helm Suicide Squad 2 instead.
It is unknown if Robbie will return in Suicide Squad 2, though she is expected to reprise the role in other DCEU films. With James Gunn’s directorial background and Idris Elba’s star power, Suicide Squad 2 may just turn out to be worth it.
What do you think? Will you give it a shot? Or is the DCEU dead to you?
The film is expected to open on August 6, 2021.
I have been wondering myself if I wanted to watch it. Since it was going to have a different director and Will Smith won’t be in it, i think I’ll like it better. I’m pretty sick of Will Smith now; also him as Genie? Bleh. Thanks for this!
Hi Effy! I feel the same way about being cautiously optimistic. It might be an improvement over the first one. And Will Smith as Genie…it’ll be very hard to adjust. I’m definitely curious to see how it turns out!
