It was exactly 25 years ago this week that Disney dropped its most unexpected sleeper hit. I was seven the first time I saw A Goofy Movie, and to this day, I still won’t forget the first time I saw Max step onto that stage and “cause the entire student body to break into a riotous frenzy!”
What happened with Max and Roxanne?
Fans have been wondering for years what happened with Max and Roxanne. She was famously absent from the sequel, An Extremely Goofy Movie. In this followup, Max and his two high school buddies (P.J. and Bobby) are done with high school and heading to college. No mention was made of Roxanne at this time.
References to Roxanne have remained slim over the years – so slim, in fact, that many fans swear to have seen cameos of her in other cartoons, only to discover that they were only lookalikes. Now, for the first time in years, Disney has provided a minor update on Max and Roxanne…in the most unexpected place. DuckTales (woohoo).
What does DuckTales have to do with Max and Roxanne?
The 80’s cartoon, DuckTales, was rebooted in 2017 (more about that here). Now three seasons and 51 episodes strong, there’s no shortage of epic Disney references. Episode 51 titled Quack Pack! aired on April 4, 2020, just in time for A Goofy Movie’s 25th anniversary.
In this episode, the DuckTales crew is trapped in a reimagining of the 90’s sitcom Quackpack, a series in the vein of Goof Troop…the series that inspired A Goofy Movie (still with me?).
In a surprise guest appearance from Goofy, Donald vents his frustrations over his abnormal family, prompting Goofy to reveal his wallet photos. He then recounts an experience that he had with his son Max.
Among the photos, there are two notable images. One shows Max dressed as Powerline for Halloween. The other, as you may have guessed, shows him and Roxanne together. The clip is available below.
WARNING: Donald’s voice is jarringly un-Donald-ish due to a spell. Just go with it:
Now we know that Max and Roxanne remained together long enough to go to prom. This is only the most recent reference to her, but by far not the biggest. The biggest reference since the 1995 film came in a 2002 episode of House of Mouse.
House of Mouse appearance
In the episode titled Max’s Embarrassing Date, Max brings Roxanne to the House of Mouse. This decision results in a series of torturously embarrassing events due to the involvement of various Disney celebrities.
The horror continues until Goofy intervenes on Max’s behalf, requesting that Max and Roxanne be allowed some privacy. The episode likely takes place shortly after the film, though it remains unclear. In any case, Disney has been doing crossovers since long before Marvel made it mainstream.
A Goofy Movie
The 1995 film had a lot going against it. The crew lacked the extravagant budget and technology as its sibling films, such as The Lion King and Pocahontas. A Goofy Movie was not expected to be a major success, as it was based on the animated series Goof Troop.
It was on home video that A Goofy Movie shined, and millennials worldwide recall it with the same love and fondness as the rest of the Disney renaissance collection. The music, the feels, and the way that we all collectively saw our own dads in Goofy…made for a film worthy of the Disney pantheon.
And lucky for us, it is now streaming on Disney+, along with its sequel An Extremely Goofy Movie, and DuckTales (woohoo).
In case you’ve ever wondered why Goofy can talk but Pluto cannot, even though they’re both dogs, I covered this critical topic here. In the meantime, I’ll be digging out my old Powerline T-shirt, heating up some popcorn, and re-watching one of my most favorite films of all time.
Until next time, my ScreenPlaya buddies, may you walk among your heroes, find your hidden treasures, and know in your hearts that you’re amazing.
