The first look at CW’s Batwoman has been revealed!

From Orange is the New Black to John Wick 2 and The Meg, Ruby Rose is set to leave her stamp on the geekosphere. But one of her most significant roles will premiere this season, and the CW has released the first look at Batwoman (not to be confused with Batgirl)! Check her out below:

Origin of Batwoman

Batwoman is among the first queer superheroes to have headlined DC comics. Otherwise known as Kate Kane, Batwoman is Bruce Wayne’s Jewish cousin. After a tragic backstory involving the murder of her mom and twin sister, Kane spent time in the military – until allegations of her lesbian relationship surfaced. She was discharged after refusing to lie about her sexual orientation.

Batwoman controversy

News that LGBT actress Ruby Rose is playing Kate Kane in the CW’s Arrowverse broke out in August. Unfortunately, Ruby Rose deleted her Twitter after a barrage of “fans” accused her of being unworthy for the role. Some accused her of “not being lesbian enough” because she refers to herself as gender fluid, while some took issue with the fact that she isn’t Jewish (it’s called acting for a reason, people).

While the DCEU struggles to pick up the pieces after some failed attempts (yes, Suicide Squad is getting a sequel), the Arrowverse is pulling all the stops on the TV front.

For those wondering, Arrowverse is the universe initiated by Arrow. The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow are both Arrow spin-offs. Supergirl eventually joined the party, but from an alternate earth/dimension…though that’s a topic for another Geek Mythology post.

First look at Batwoman

Batman’s mythology has only been hinted at in the Arrowverse so far. But this season, Gotham city will finally show up during a crossover event. When the Arrowverse heroes visit Gotham, they will run into Batwoman. Although there are still no signs of Batman himself, Ruby Rose unveiled Batwoman’s first look on Instagram this morning (10/09/18).

The uniform closely resembles her comic-book appearance, down to the iconic red wig. The image has mostly been met with excitement online.

If all goes according to plan, Rose will star in her own spinoff series later in the year. If Batwoman premieres on the CW, she will officially be the first lesbian superhero to headline a TV show. In the meantime, the crossover event (called Elseworlds) will begin with an episode of The Flash on December 9. An episode of Arrow will continue the story on December 10, and it will conclude with Supergirl on December 11.

Although the Legends of Tomorrow will sit this one out, the crossover will include Superman, played by Tyler Hoechlin and will introduce Lois Lane, played by Grimm’s Elizabeth Tulloch.
